He Moncayo Natural Park It is a place located in the Iberian System, housing the highest summit of this System, the Moncayo with its 2314m. Since it is a very accessible mountain, every year thousands of people ascend to its top, since it does not take more than 2 / 2.5 hours to reach it. It is also a good option for those who visit the beautiful villages in the area as Agreda, Vera del Moncayo and many others.
The Moncayo is located in the province of Saragossa and very close to Soria, at least the route taken, since 50% of the mountain corresponds to each province. There are numerous accommodation options, including shelters, shelters and a campsite about 10km away. In our case we chose the last option and decided to get up a little early so as not to have to suffer the inclemency of the heat that begins to suffer in the month of June.
Iberian system Ascension to Moncayo
Moncayo has several paths and the simplest is the one that starts from Sanctuary of the Virgen del Moncayo, which can be accessed from an asphalted track that ends in a small car park one kilometer from the Sanctuary, but for those who think of saving you this kilometer, you can continue to the Sanctuary parking lot which you will reach by a narrow dirt track from the Last parking
He Sanctuary It houses a restaurant (full in summer) and a hostel for groups, except for the months of July and August in which we can make individual reservations.
Sanctuary of the Virgen del Moncayo
The route to Moncayo
We leave from the Sanctuary for a track without loss and quite well marked at the beginning. Before continuing to explain the path, we must be aware that this route is short but with some slope, in addition to NO count on Water All the way Take it easy if you're not in a hurry. The first kilometer and a half runs by shade, thanks to the pine forest that exists until 1900m / 2000m altitude, but from this height, the Sun will be your only road companion and not always an ally.
We reach the 1900m of altitude and we can see the summit of Moncayo with ease. Specifically it is the mountain on the right in the photo below. From here we have several options to promote it. You can go straight ahead, an option not recommended for winter, or follow the normal path that runs along the left side, flanking the side of the mountain and using a path marked on zig Zag. This last option is the one we decided to use.
This part is the toughest part of the route, since you climb 350m of unevenness in a very short distance, but at least the views of the Moncayo help us with the effort. You will arrive at a sign that marks the danger of ice falls in winter and 100m later you will reach the edge of the mountain, from which the road will be much quieter until you reach the summit. This area is usually punished by strong winds, since there is no nearby mountain higher than the Moncayo. I would recommend uploading a windbreaker even in summer, although the feeling you have in the parking lot is very hot.
From here we just need to walk almost in a straight line until we reach the Top, seeing the snow that are still from last winter (Photos from the first half of June).
Once at the top (1h15 '), although it usually takes a little longer, it depends on the red bull for breakfast :-D, we take advantage of the bivouac to hide from the wind reigning and a few minutes later we decided to set course parking. It was from this moment when we really started to find quite a lot of people climbing (it was 9: 00/9: 30) and the temperatures began to rise dramatically. This means that in summer ... get up early.
Since we had a lot of time to spend during the morning, we took the opportunity to visit the Veruela Monastery and his Wine Museum, In the town of Vera del Moncayo. The visit costs just € 2/3, but it is incredibly well restored, in addition to its considerable beauty and size. A full-fledged recommendation.
The Monastery has the anecdote that it was the place where he stayed Gustavo Adolfo Becquer to write "Letters from my Cell".
