The first thing that comes to mind about Las Vegas is the casinos. Located in 4 and 5 star hotels where luxury reigns on all four sides. However, the city offers many more things and not all related to fun or leisure with the smell of asphalt. Very close, just 30 minutes away is Red rock canyon, a natural park with beautiful landscapes worthy of a visit.

Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas there are not only casinos

Many people in the United States visit Las Vegas with the aim of betting and leaving part of their salary. However, you can enjoy the casino without leaving the country, and so visiting Las Vegas does not mean you have to leave your money. Red rock canyon It is an example, as is the Valley of Fire, although the latter is just over 1 hour. Both contain similar landscapes, rocky and reddish in color. Where the heat in summer is suffocating and in winter it is cold.

Visiting Red Rock Canyon in one day

The normal thing to visit Red Rock Canyon is to reserve a morning or a full day. The park contains a good number of hiking trails, most of them relatively short, so it is very normal that we can do between 2 or 3 without any problem.

It is located just 30 minutes from downtown and is located west of Las Vegas. Upon arrival at the park there is a control booth where we must pay pay $ 15 per vehicle. From there we take a circular road which only makes one sense and starts at the right margin. This has a capacity for two vehicles and where you can not run ... It is called Red Rock Canyon scenic drive and has a length of 21km or 13 miles.

On our right we will begin to see a series of parkings from where different hiking trails begin. For example, the first three car parks correspond to the reddish rocky area that gives its name to Red Rock Canyon. There are so many that it is convenient to know where to stop and therefore we have to take the duties learned, such as in which parking lot the bathrooms are.

Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas are not just casinos - Calico I

The first 3 car parks are the most important of all because of the importance of the routes that leave from here. We do Calico Tanks (2.5 miles) and Calico I (1 mile) and we didn't feel like doing more because of the intense heat. We saw the rest of the places through the network of viewpoints.

Calico Tanks It is perhaps the most common route and the most traveled by its water pools. It is located in the third parking lot (Sandstone Quarry) where there is a small quarry and some bathrooms. They consider it of moderate effort although perhaps it is because of the heat because it is not long nor is it very uneven. We did it in August and all the water pools were completely dry, so doing it in summer doesn't make much sense. What would make sense is to do it at sunset and see the dusk in Las Vegas.

Following the circular road, we will find a very desert landscape and what is surprising are the roads in the center of it. Possibly to perform in winter since in summer they do not have any interest. For example, the viewpoint that is halfway is not of great interest.

What we would have liked to do is one of the routes located east of the park. A somewhat greener area and where the route of Pine Creek Canyon, 2.4 miles and also Ice Box Canyon 2.2 miles, the latter where even in summer there is some water.

For the rest there is not much else to see, although if you are lucky the same thing crosses a desert turtle or goat on the road. We did not see a single animal, although if you go to the visitor center they will tell you a lot about them.
