We have decided to perform our visit to the north of the Grand Canyon, he North rim, in a hot month of August. Just the month in which the authorities recommend extreme precautions due to high temperatures. For example, in the South rim, the most visited area, values higher than 40 degrees are reached and if we have the bad head of trying to go down to the Colorado River, we will run into almost 50 degrees. But calm, the grand canyon can be visited in summer and now we tell you where.

North Rim, our visit to the north of the Grand Canyon

It is not the first time we visited the Grand Canyon in the month of August and therefore we know how he spends it at this time. Hiking is almost a utopia although there are people who dare and therefore many people are rescued every year for dehydration. At this time it is best to visit the main viewpoints in a classic, get out of the car, take the photo and return to the air conditioning shelter.

It is certainly not always the case and seeing storms on such hot days is more frequent than it seems. That's when temperatures drop a few degrees, especially in the afternoon. The best time not to cook. But of course, the Grand Canyon is so big that we can have completely different climates depending on where we are, South rim, West rim or North rim. The first two are famous for their helicopter excursions from Las Vegas or from the Grand Canyon airport. They are also famous for their viewpoints, such as the famous glass balcony of the Skywalk.

But the North Rim (north of the Grand Canyon) is different. Located at more than 2500 meters high, the highest area in the entire Grand Canyon, has the least visited area of the national park and at the same time the one with the best temperature. At night it is usually lower than 10 degrees and during the day they rarely exceed 30 degrees. And with all this, because there are fewer visitors? Three are the main causes. The first is its remoteness with Las Vegas, at 4:30 ', when the South Rim is only 2 hours away. The second is its lack of infrastructure, with only 3 or 4 hotels in the area. And finally his remoteness with the Colorado River which is hardly distinguished from this area.

Three things that maybe we could miss them and that in my opinion are supplied by two things that the rest of the Grand Canyon does not have. The North Rim is green and there live the only ones Bisons from all Grand Canyon National Park.

Visit to the north of the Grand Canyon

End of August After spending a couple of days browsing the Lake Powell, We leave Page towards the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. 2h30 'by car on low traffic roads. Our goal was to visit the main viewpoints of the area and do a small hiking trail.

Less than 30 minutes from reaching the North Rim and 5 minutes from the entrance to the park, we cross a pack of Bison on our left side. There were 8 or 9 copies which were about 25 meters from us. Animals that at first glance seemed peaceful but with the size they had the best was not to approach.

After passing the control we arrive at the parking area and where several accommodations are concentrated. From there and after a brief 5-minute walk we will arrive at the first viewpoint of the Grand Canyon without encountering a hot surprise. 5 minutes before arriving at the parking lot, our thermometer marked 12 degrees. We were now at 28 degrees. How is this change possible? The wind coming from the bottom of the canyon, like every good oven, rose so hot that it caused the edges of the great canyon and its surroundings to rise dramatically. Still we were phenomenal and the viewpoint (Bright angel point) it is a wonder.

Next to this viewpoint there are about 3 more, so we spent about 1 hour going through them all. Too bad that from here it still does not look good Colorado River.

Once this area was finished, we returned to the car and headed to the Angels Window, one of the most famous viewpoints of the Grand Canyon. This we would leave for the end and on the same road where it is located we stop first in Enchanted View.

Not far from Vista Encantada is Roosevelt Point, where you can almost see the Colorado River. Each time we have it closer! Certainly the last two views were not the most spectacular after seeing Bright Angel Point, but the good will soon come.

Taking advantage of the weather, we stopped in a parking lot before reaching Walhalla Overlook. You can't see anything from the parking lot, but from there a route of about 7 kilometers (round trip) goes to a viewpoint called Cape Final. It is perhaps a good time to get to know the forests of the North Rim.

We were about to reach the end when on the left side of the car we see the views of the Angels Window, a window to the Grand Canyon. We are already at the end of the road and from here we have two viewpoints, Angels Window and Cape royal. The first is an immense hole through which it is seen Colorado River. Also if we follow the path we can go over and have good views.

How curious that the first time we see the Colorado River in the north of the Grand Canyon in good condition is this way.

Vista the window we went to pass over it. A narrow road with safety rails on the sides led us to the tip of the great pre-Cusco. Not suitable for people with vertigo…

We turn around and continue walking to the last viewpoint, the Cape royal. The truth that so much viewpoint in such a short space of time removed a little the surprise effect to this place. Surely if we had seen it at the beginning we would be open-mouthed.

Back and thinking about our night in Las Vegas, we decided to take a detour before reaching the main road that marked Imperial Point. This road ends at the highest point of the entire Grand Canyon, so it was worth visiting

Seen Point Imperial, we ended our visit and took the road back. A magnificent trip.

You can only visit the north of the Grand Canyon between the months of June and October. The rest of the months the road is cut by snow as it is located at levels above 2500 meters.

There are not many accommodation options. In our case we stayed in a hotel a few kilometers from the entrance to the part, theKaibab Lodge. Very cozy, with cabins in the woods and good food. Recommended.

When does the entrance cost?

The cost is30$ per vehicle Ticket valid for 7 days.

What clothes to wear

During the day you can go perfectly in short sleeves and with good doses of water in the backpack. At night things change, temperatures drop below 10 degrees and it freezes on many occasions. If we walk at night we must wear a coat.

Where to hire a helicopter tour?

I said it. There are several options to fly over the Grand Canyon. Or hiring a tour to leave from Las Vegas or, take a helicopter from the base that you have to Grand Canyon Village.
